“Regional Pirate Festival Sets Sail”
For the first time, South Central Minnesota will be getting a very unique “family fun” pirate festival for a summer event. The 4th ‘Iowa-MINNESOTA Pirate Festival’ will be rotating from Clear Lake, IA., to its new host site in Owatonna.
On August 12th & 13th [11am to 6pm] Morehouse Park & Chalet will be converted into Port Royale with a wide variety of shows, performers, artisan merchants, games of skill, rides, hands-on activities, contests, treasure hunts, food court delights, pirate pub libations and more.
“Having served as a tourist attraction in Northern Iowa for three summers, it is time to grow the festival for a wider population in a larger setting,” announces the event’s original producer Gregory Schmidt of Festivals International.
With new management by David Lorton of the Hissing Serpent Trading Company, who is an annual mainstay at the Big Island Rendevouz, there will be new elements added to the nautical, pirate and theatrical themed affair.
Professional performing acts traveling from as far away as Kansas City, Des Moines and Omaha, such as ‘Crazy Boy Coy’, ‘Pirate Merlyn Majik’ and ‘Capt. Rapier Wit’s Fire’ will fill the three stages and Pirate Pub with some 35 scheduled shows.
The merchants’s bazaar or “thieves market” will offer hand-made art and craft goods that can only be found at such an event. Some of the artisans will be demonstrating their skills.
For the interests of all ages, there will also be a mix of activities from knife and axe tossing to kiddie archery and treasure hunts. Prizes will be given in the daily costume and tattoo contests.
Admission to the Iowa-MINNESOTA Pirate Fest for adults is $10 with a two-day pass at $15. Kids from 5 to 15 are $5 and tots are free. Parking is also free.
